BGAN Terminal, Rent Or Buy?

The BGAN terminal is a great modern innovation, and has enabled many people to communicate in areas where there would be no other way to do so. In places where there is no signal available, this piece of equipment will get the job done. If you only need the device for a short time, a rental agreement may be an option for you.

An important consideration is whether you will need internet connectivity or just voice. If you will only be needing voice, a satellite phone could be an option, but if internet is needed, then it will have to be a BGAN terminal. The models available currently offer very respectable connection speeds with multiple users being a possibility. The Hughes 9201 and Thrane and Thrane Explorer are a couple of models to look at.

If you would be using these devices extensively, then there are a wide range of payment plans available. You can have them on a contract or prepaid. As with many things like this, the costs vary considerably with the amount of usage. The more you use it, the less you will be paying per unit, but it still will not be cheap. If you need one for a long period then it would be worth paying the initial cost of purchasing outright rather than renting.

The satellite phone can also be used to send and receive data, but it is just a bit more involved to set up than a BGAN terminal. If you were only going to need data connections for short periods, and longer periods of voice connections, then a satellite phone could be an alternative. You just need a connecting wire and a laptop plus some software which is readily available. If you just need to send and receive SMS then a satellite phone will do the job as is.

The way to connect a BGAN terminal to the satellite is simplicity itself. You must have line of sight to a geostationary satellite. You can use a compass to get a rough idea where this is, then slowly rotate the unit by hand, it will normally let you know when you are in the right direction. Once in the correct position, push a button and it will automatically negotiate with the satellite and complete the connection. Generally, the average time for a connection to be made is around 2 minutes, a very experienced operator could do it in around one minute with a good signal.

Remaining in touch is one of todays major necessities. Having the ability to connect and stay connected is essential for most businesses and the BGAN technology definitely delivers that. When you need quality equipment, then these terminals are what you will need to use. Although they may seem expensive at the start, you must consider how many years of service they will offer, and what technical innovations went into the research and development. BGAN is definitely one of the better choices that you could make when looking for something in this line.

So in a nutshell, if you need it for a couple of weeks, then rental would be the way to go, but if you are going to be using it time after time, then you really need to consider making the investment in an outright purchase.
